about

While being known school-wide for spontaneously serenading his Fairfield High classmates, whether at the cafeteria or in the van to a wrestling meet, Gilmore Lane never expected his foray into music to go any further upon graduation and entering the workplace. Little did he know that the Service Merchandise assistant manager hiring him was none other than aspiring local producer Purnell "Pleasant P" Hicks, who saw in young Gilmore the vehicle for the first in a series of ambitious EPs which, in retrospect, might have helped shaped the flourishing urban music scene more had they reached a wider audience.

lyrics

yeah, huh
when I came out of the record store
‘bout 3 in the afternoon
I saw you there
dressed to a ‘t’
perhaps even inappropriately
and questions were raised…

I say damn, girl
is you a working girl?
I say damn, girl
is you a working girl?

as I reach for my wallet
not sure how much I got
but I give you some of it
if you put it on the market
pretty damn sure
that there’ll be demand for it
with that outfit you’re sportin’
bet your bottom dollar
that it’s me who’s hollerin’ towards ya
it's me you should be escorting
I won’t objectify
but you’re fly
and you got me asking

damn, girl
is you a working girl?
I say damn, girl
is you a working girl?

hey now, what’s that style?
ambiguous look that makes me go ‘blaw!’
forget the white sneakers of Melanie Griffith
naw you’re in the black stilettos of a mid-range lovesmith
much respect for a lady’s choice in how to dress
it’s a mess out there tryin’ to make your mark
and yet while you shouldn’t judge books by the cover
still I’m asking do I gots to pay to be your lover?

I say damn, girl
is you a working girl?

damn, girl
